2 An overview of the collection of images:

Asylum

During my stay at the Van Gogh artist in residence in 2022 I started experimenting with AI image generating. At the same time I got inspired by the story that Vincent van Gogh – during his stay in the asylum of Saint-Paul in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence – started to repaint images of other artists that he only knew from black and white reproductions.

Asylum consists of colourful portraits, created from black and white reproductions of weird looking or disabled people from my personal archive of cut out imagery. Infusing these portraits with the hallucination-like quality of the algorithms used in AI image generating, I created painterly like somewhat abstract portraits, by intuitively matching each portrait with a variety of painterly styles.

In the final publication, the color reproductions are mounted seperately into the cahier, mimicing historical production methods when colour reproduction was still a costly matter.
