What happens to an image when it becomes a body?
In the historic building of the old gas works in Leiden, I present my latest works. Aurora Pavilion inventories different ways of transforming photographic images. Medical photography forms the point of departure. Birth, deformity, bodily vulnerability — images from old found books — reappear as digital photo collages, reliefs, objects and installations.
The exhibition brings together new works with existing work, including several Asylum portraits (2019) and the videos from the installation Diorama Mechanica (2005). Together they sketch a magical world in which impressions of early childhood development become intertwined with those of celestial bodies, architectural ornaments and historical photography.
Aurora Pavilion is an imaginary exhibition, a blueprint of psychological processes that shape our experiential world. For the architect, the pavilion embodies their creation narrative; a mythology of perception.
