The Universal Kimono

a photo project initiated by Roosje Klap

The universal kimono is designed by Roosje Klap. The fabric’s graphic design shows typography with text of the universal declaration of human rights. For this project Roosje asked different photographers and artists to make a new image with the kimono such as  Petrovsky & Ramone, Maarten Spruyt and Viviane Sassen.
The kimono colors reminded me of the colors and graphic theme of the book for the exhibition ‘The Family of Man’, curated by Edward Steichen in 1955. Using a mask I transform myself into a personification of humanity in a universal and theatrical way. The hands begging upwards, with its’ bent wrists towards the sky is a reference to the Zadkine monument in Rotterdam.
